Summary/Abstract: This article aims to analyze the urban salon romance from the perspective of musical structure and vocal interpretation, in order to highlight the complexity of this artistic genre situated at the boundary between tradition and modernity. The romance emerged and developed in the Romanian cultural space starting in the first half of the nineteenth century, withina context of accelerated societal modernization. The penetration of Western influences, especially French and Italian, into Romanian urban culture, together with the persistence of certain Eastern and indigenous traditions (lăutărească music andrural folklore), contributed to shaping the melodic and interpretative characteristics of this hybrid genre, deeply emotional andadaptable to the tastes of society.
