Summary/Abstract: Abstract The liberty seen by the Moderns is an entirely different conception of liberty from that of the Ancients, particularly the Athenians. This new type of liberty, which is still our vision and our way of life today, is that of being protected by laws enacted by professionals and of being subject to them in order to be able to conduct one's own private affairs in safety; then, this can be seen as progress. Firstly, we will focus on the idea of security, which seems to have changed its role from that of a medium for achieving a goal and our interests to that of an end in itself; modern security is in itself contradictory to its own rationale and it governs our way of behaving. Secondly, we will focus on the concept of security in relation to its modern representation: we will thus see how the manifestation of security is one of the greatest manifestations of modernity. To illustrate this, we will look at an idea supported by Bentham, namely that of the Public Opinion Tribunal.
