Summary/Abstract: relationship between the poet and his beloved, their affection being portrayed as both earthly and transcendent. Written for Matilde Urrutia, the woman who became Neruda’s muse and later his wife, these sonnets express an intense devotion, revealing at the same time the connection between the lovers and their native land. The present article will show how, in this collection, the poet explores the complexities of love, intertwining it with his reverence for the earth and for the natural environment. It will reveal how, through lush, vivid imagery, Matilde is elevated to a symbolic figure tied to the land, to the very soil that nurtures life. The research will also demonstrate that, as a Chilean woman and as a devoted wife, Matilde represents a gentle presence that calms the turbulent tides of the bard’s restless heart, encouraging him to forge a stronger connection with the world.
