Summary/Abstract: Singing or listening to ‘songs’ is usual practice in an ordinary Hindu household. Sometime a kathavacak during kirtan or an elderly woman sings song during marriage. Singing songs, thus, isconsidered auspicious. Among the ‘diasporas’ singing or listening to such songs turns into a methodof recollecting the memory and establishes their desire to return back to their homeland. What isinteresting though is the manner these songs turn into testimonies of love-longing and departure. Inthe paper, I will look at these songs in order to understand the effect of crossing the black waters on the female workers. The article examines the effect of these songs on the woman of the diasporic community so powerfully outlined in Amitav Ghosh’s ‘Sea of Poppies’ (2009).
