Summary/Abstract: This paper focuses on the challenges encountered while training language and (future) legal professionals in the field of human rights in our globalized and reticular world. Well-established international organizations and expanding NGOs, as well as companies which have adopted the CSR business model, often require their multilingual employees to undertake human rights-related translation tasks for which most of them have not been trained. The academic training offer in this specific area of translation is quasi non-existent, with some notable exceptions such as the NYU School of Professional Studies which provides a course entitled “Translation and Interpreting for Human Rights”. Canadian universities have been teaching legal translation and jurilinguistics fo rmore than four decades (Gémar 1979), forensic linguistics became a new discipline in American universities in the early 2000s (e.g. “Linguistics: Forensic Linguistics”, Hofstra University) and today the world of academia, confronted with many humanitarian crises, is starting to identify the necessity for specific training addressed to professionals who need to translate human rights-related discourses. Identifying the characteristics and challenges of human rights translation, as well as the specific needs of the target-public, helps raise awareness about the complexity of the field of human rights and its multifaceted specialized language reflecting a multitude of interconnected sectors(business, health, technology, politics, tourism, environment, education, journalism, etc.).
