Summary/Abstract: Our study focuses on the various translations in contemporary French and Romanian media of the “they/them” pronouns that are preferred by non-binary people to speak about themselves. The purpose of this approach is to examine the equivalents of these English pronouns, and the translation techniques resorted to. In the theoretical part of the paper, we briefly present the linguistic challenges related to the affirmation and validation of the non-binary identity. Then, we examine the pronouns used by nonbinary people when speaking about themselves and expose various strategies meant to create a more neutral French language. For our case study, we have selected a corpus of news articles published on the Internet. The translation of the “they/them” pronouns represents a genuine challenge because of the lack of similar mechanisms of expression in French and in Romanian. As there is no standardized terminology, translators frequently resort to neologisms, to grammatical equivalents or to calques to render the English pronouns into the target languages.
