Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the scientific views of researchers on the understanding of the philosophical category of “mentality” in the historical and philosophical discourse, from its appearance in scientific circulation as a position of the “spirit of the people”, which belongs to the philosophy of the New Age to the understanding of mentality by modern Ukrainian scientists. Mentality is considered as a characteristic feature of an ethnic group or a specific ethnic community, which includes a way of thinking, views, religious characteristics, beliefs, habits, cultural stereotypes and other spiritual phenomena that are common among members of this community orin society. The statement issubstantiated that the characteristic features of the Ukrainian mentality include such features as existentialism, cordocentrism, which is manifested in cordiality, emotionality, sensitivity, antheism, religiosity, and expressiveness of speech. It is established that the mentality has a powerful influence on the cultural and educational life of the Ukrainian people and its national and civilizational self-determination.
