Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this study is to examine the mediating role of loneliness in the relationship between social isolation and suicidal ideation among adults. Although previous research has consistently demonstrated strong links between social isolation, loneliness, and suicidal behavior, empirical studies testing the mediating impact of loneliness remain limited. By using a correlational research design, the study utilized the Social Isolation Scale, the UCLA Loneliness Scale (ULS-8), and the Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation (BSSI) for data collection. The sample consisted of 643 adults aged 18 and over, reached through snowball sampling. Data analyses were conducted using SPSS 29.0 and regression. The sampling technique was snowball sampling method and 643 participants were collected from Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and Republic of Turkey. The findings revealed that social isolation significantly predicted suicidal ideation, and loneliness was positively associated with both variables. Regression analysis demonstrated that loneliness plays a significant mediating role in the relationship between social isolation and suicidal ideation. This indicates that social isolation increases suicidal tendencies both directly and indirectly by heightening feelings of loneliness. These results highlight the importance of strengthening social support systems and implementing psychotherapeutic interventions aimed at reducing loneliness as a means of preventing suicidal risk. The study contributes to the field by providing a comprehensive framework for understanding the interplay between social isolation, loneliness, and suicidal ideation, and offers valuable implications for mental health professionals.
