Summary/Abstract: Since the dawn of time, people have appreciated herbal plants and introduced them to their surroundings to always have them close. Depending on the canons of beauty applicable in a given culture or the prevailing fashion, the appearance, location and function of herb gardens have changed over the centuries. In almost every culture, in addition to practical use, herbs were also attributed with magical properties or given specific religious symbolism. However, the functionality of these assumptions, expressed in easy access to the location of herbal plants, has remained unchanged. Thanks to the passion, ingenuity and commitment of many people throughout history, many interesting assumptions and concepts have been created that can be an inspiration for successors.Nowadays, we can observe a dynamic increase in the popularity of herbal gardens, both in private and in public spaces. The methods of arranging herbal gardens are diverse, adapted to the needs of users, as well as their stylistic preferences. Some gardens refer to classic historical layouts, presenting a simple geometric layout, others remain in a free style, referring to nature. Still others are based on modern technological solutions. Regardless, today, when we have access to a huge number of species and varieties that differ in habit, texture, colour of fl owers or leaves, we have the opportunity to create beautiful and unique herb gardens.
