Summary/Abstract: Old Polish handwritten medical guides are an interesting example of the medical culture of the old society, its mentality and popular medical “knowledge”, based largely on folk herbal medicine. The herbal treatments used were based mainly on easily accessible plants, whose healing properties were not always used in the right way, which caused a number of health complications and sometimes threatened the lives of the sick. Handwritten medical compendiums often referred to printed guides, published since the 16th century, supplemented with folk knowledge and the experience of medics.
