The Role of the Gendarmerie in Ensuring National Economic Security in Türkiye

Summary/Abstract: Economic security constitutes a critical component of national security, and this study examines the contributions of the Turkish Gendarmerie to national economic security. The first section outlines the historical development and institutional structure of the Gendarmerie. The second section defines the concept of economic security, discusses related crime categories, and reviews cooperation mechanisms within the European Union. Drawing on data from the Ministry of Justice, the general profile of selected economic-security-related offences in Türkiye is also presented. The third section analyzes crime trends within the Gendarmerie’s jurisdiction between 2020 and 2024, identifying the proportion of offences linked to economic security and assessing the institution’s role in this domain. The conclusion emphasizes that regulatory frameworks in developed countries enhance law enforcement contributions to national economic security.
