Summary/Abstract: This essay examines the question of the existence of abstract comics by analysing the relationship between abstraction, abstraction as process, and narration within the comics medium. Drawing on theories of visual perception, modernist art, and philosophy – particularly Plato and Gestalt psychology – the author argues that abstract expression is not an exception but a fundamental structural component of comics, most notably at the level of layout. At the same time, the text carefully distinguishes abstraction in the strict sense from stylisa tion, conceptual imagery, and abstraction as process, maintaining that comics, as an inherently narrative medium, cannot become fully abstract without losing their ontological foundations. Through a wide range of historical and contempo rary examples, the essay concludes that so called “abstract comics” occupy an in termedial space between comics and contemporary fine art, and that the bound ary between these two domains must be conceptually and critically maintained.
