Summary/Abstract: The article provides a concise research into the interrelations of a soci ety and its referential literature, thus explaining the creation of archetypal literary themes. This is succeeded by a short overview of the identity of Canadian short story and the remarks on the life and work of the classic Canadian author Ethel Wilson. Wilson’s short story “Birds” from the collection Mrs. Golightly and Other Stories (1961) is used to analytically identify and explain the themes which later became typical of Canadian Literature. The article concludes with underlining the crucial influence of Ethel Wilson’s literary work on modern Canadian short story authors, and especially on that of Alice Munro.
