Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the influence of postmodern theories, particularly those of Michel Foucault, on the later work of Danilo Kiš, with special attention given to the short story “The Magical Circle of the Cards” from the collection A Tomb for Boris Davidovich. The analysis demonstrates how Kiš, through his toriographic metafiction, intertextuality, and postmodern narrative strategies, problematizes the boundaries between historical truth and literary fiction. The story portrays the Siberian labor camp as a system of power that is dispersed and capillar. In its operation, the fates of both protagonists and antagonists are shaped by a network of power mechanisms they are unable to comprehend. The paper confirms the significant influence of postmodern theories on Kiš’s prose and highlights his ability to explore mechanisms of power, fate, and human vul nerability through literature. By depicting repression both within and beyond a strictly political context, and presenting it as the collective fate of humanity in the turbulent and terrifying twentieth century, Danilo Kiš demonstrates its timeless ness, universality, and perpetual possibility.
