Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the professional trajectory of engineer Alfred Gottereau, a largely overlooked yet influential figure in 19th-century Romanian urban modernisation. Drawing on archival research and historical documentation, the study reconstructs Gottereau’s contributions to the introduction of gas lighting in Bucharest and the construction of the Filaret gasworks, situating these within the broader context of the city’s infrastructural and technological transformation. Beyond his engineering achievements, the paper highlights Gottereau’s involvement in architectural projects and his collaborations with his son, architect Paul Gottereau, as well as his lectures at the Société de Géographie in Nancy, which provide valuable contemporary perspectives on Romania’s modernisation. The conclusions emphasise Alfred Gottereau’s role in shaping the early modernisation of Bucharest and call for further scholarly attention to similar technical and architectural figures who contributed to the city’s 19th-century development.
