Summary/Abstract: This paper will look at the editions of print music by Jovan Frajt and Sergije Strahov which were published in the period from 1921 to 1944 in Belgrade. An examination of the preserved parts of Frajt’s and Strahov’s collections, and additional analysis of data from the daily press and periodicals, as well as memoirs and archive holdings allow a partial reconstruction of the field of popular music in Yugoslavia, including identification of prominent authors, text writers and performers of popular songs from that period, as well as genres and cultural influences (USA, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Italy, France, USSR, etc.). A comparison of trends in this field in the region of Yugoslavia with trends in other countries provides the basis for making assumptions regarding the characteristics of local production of popular music. The aim is to shed light on the circumstances in which autochthonous Yugoslav popular music production was created and to consider the importance of this aspect for the research of Yugoslav society and culture of that period.
