Summary/Abstract: This paper aims to outline the relationship between God and human freedom in the classical tradition. The authors start from contemporary conceptions that advocate the idea of complete autonomy of the human will (Swinburne and Plantinga) and indicate the problematic nature of this position starting from the question: if God is truly the Creator, can man›s freedom and his will be beyond God’s creative act? The classical Christian tradition (as well as other classical theists within Judaism and Islam) understands God as reason why something exists for as long as it exists. Everything that exists in any possible way owes its existence to the Creator at every moment. It is no different with human freedom. Starting from Thomas Aquinas and some of his contemporary interpreters, the authors of the article maintain that the relationship between God and freedom should therefore be thought of differently: God, as the First Cause, also allows human free acts to be, but man has the freedom within created reality to choose good or evil.
