Summary/Abstract: This article outlines the development of the former Palace of the Princes of Transylvania in Alba Iulia (Karlsburg) based on general plans of the fortifications dating from 1711 to 1903. Important new information is provided by some architectural surveys of the two eastern courtyards, which served as headquarters for the arsenal and artillery barracks of the Habsburg and Austro-Hungarian troops. Preserved in the National Archives of Vienna (Österreichisches Staatsarchiv, Kriegsarchiv), the surveys were drawn in 1774–1776, 1819, and 1821 and have not been published previously. The analysis of the information offered by these sources helps explain many architectural transformations up to the beginning of the twentieth century and provides important data necessary for the field research that began in 2014, as well as for restoration and tourism projects.
