Summary/Abstract: In this text, I draw on the work of Maria Janion, who – commenting on Theodor Adorno’s diagnosis – analysed the effects of 'the domination of the culture industry, that is, the suffocation of culture in the ubiquitous cult of kitsch'. I address the educational consequences of this process. I discuss the importance of interpretation, as well as the ethical role of distance, criticism, and resistance to reducing education to 'preparation for a mythical job market'. I comment on Lech Witkowski’s concept of 'applied humanities' and his exploration of the dangers associated with 'kitschy humanism'.
