Summary/Abstract: Environmental governance plays a critical role in advancing sustainable development across Africa, a continent endowed with rich biodiversity and natural resources yet facing acute environmental challenges. Rapid urbanization, deforestation, desertification, pollution, and the impacts of climate change have placed immense pressure on Africa’s ecosystems and communities. This study explores the nexus between environmental governance and sustainable development, examining the effectiveness of existing policies, institutional frameworks, and community participation mechanisms in mitigating ecological degradation while promoting economic and social equity. Through a review of relevant literature, policy documents, and case studies from selected African countries, the study identifies key challenges such as weak regulatory enforcement, corruption, inadequate funding, and limited integration of indigenous knowledge in environmental management. At the same time, it highlights opportunities for improvement, including the adoption of green technologies, regional cooperation, climate finance mechanisms, and the role of civil society in accountability. The paper argues that for sustainable development to be achieved, Africa must strengthen its environmental governance through transparent institutions, inclusive policy-making, and multi-level coordination among stakeholders. Furthermore, aligning national development plans with global frameworks like the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the African Union’s Agenda 2063 is essential for long-term ecological and human well-being. The study concludes that transformative environmental governance, rooted in equity and resilience, is indispensable for addressing Africa’s development challenges and ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.
