Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the nature of love (eros) underlying the poem Insomnia. Homer. Taut sails. by the Russian Acmeist poet Osip Mandelstam (1891−1938). The essence of love, grounded in the concept of eros (ἔρως) on which the poet builds his verses, is explored through the prism of ancient ethics and aesthetics − primarily Homer’s Iliad, Hesiod’s Theogony, and Sappho’s fragment 130 − as well as through the reflections of major Hellenic philosophers such as Gorgias (Encomium of Helen), Plato (Symposium), and others.
