Summary/Abstract: Although ostensibly dedicated to rural life, Virgil's Georgics fundamentally explore eternal philosophical themes and questions. Thus, Book III of the poem, while cloaked in advice on the breeding of cattle and livestock, deals with the timeless dialectic of Eros and Thanatos. Being himself a participant in Philodemus's Epicurean school, the poet partly relies on the aforementioned school of thought while also addressing the theme in his own distinctive manner.
