Summary/Abstract: The present paper discusses the use of obscene words in translating Plautine comedies, occasioned by the most recent Serbian prose translation (Acović 2022). In situations which might seem to offer some basis for an obscene translation, Plautus in fact uses words and expressions from a higher literary register, sometimes with a colloquial slant, or potentially lascivious allusions, which are consciously kept at the level of mere possibility. Analysis of select examples of Plautine diction and their translations shows that obscenities in this translation are arbitrary, hence additionally inappopriate.
