Summary/Abstract: Reading Polish interior design publications can be a starting point for analysing the housing situation in the People’s Republic of Poland, the offer of the furniture industry and even customs. At the same time, by looking at the presented iconographic materials and listening to the language used by the authors, it is possible to observe the evolution that the very notion of a dwelling has undergone in the 30 years since the period of ‘small stabilisation’.The three books (Mieszkanie, Książka o mieszkaniu and Mieszkać inaczej) from three successive decades bear witness to the aspirations, concrete problems of dwellings and the attempts to face them through different methods and directions: from the dwelling considered in the 1960s as a place that must function well to the eclectic space of freedom in the 1980s, from impersonal forms and functional centres to emotions, temporariness and freedom, and finally from the projection of an ideal future, through acceptance of reality to complete contestation and conscious escapism.
