Summary/Abstract: The article traces in diachronic sequence the one hundred- and five-year tradition of teaching German at the UNWE. The European and German-speaking intercultural influence of the founding fathers is highlighted, with attention to societal conditions in different historical periods and their impact on the learning process. Some of the numerous teaching aids published by the active professors at the University over the years are analysed in detail. Continuity in teaching is emphasized, as is the work of the department in introducing innovative educational methods.
