Formative Assessment and Written Communication Competence in English as a Foreign Language (4th Grade) – Results from a Pedagogical Experiment

Summary/Abstract: The article presents the results of a pedagogical experiment aimed at improving written communication competence in English as a foreign language among 4th-grade students. The experiment was conducted with 137 students from four different regions in Bulgaria. The organization and methodology of the experimental activities are briefly described. The criteria, indicators, and benchmarks included in the diagnostic tools are listed. Statistical evidence is provided to support their validity and the effects of the experimental teaching. Based on the research data obtained, the article highlights both the achievements and the challenges in the development of written communication competence in English as a foreign language.
