Summary/Abstract: This essay explores the idea of reducing the mind to physical or computational systems, tracing the historical roots of this view from Descartes' mechanistic dualism to contemporary neuroscience and transhumanist projects. Drawing on personal reflections shaped by science fiction and ideological education in late socialist Bulgaria, the author highlights the philosophical limitations of radical reductionism. By contrasting deterministic models of consciousness with the persistent complexity and individuality of subjective experience, the text argues for a moderate skepticism grounded in the axiom that human knowledge is necessarily limited and incomplete. The essay critiques technological utopias and warns against treating metaphors (like the brain as a computer) as literal truths, advocating instead for intellectual humility in the face of human consciousness.
