Summary/Abstract: Francois Jullien conceives the intimate as a shared inner space. This article introduces the notion of the ought as emerging from interiority or from the experience of “living as two”. It argues that the intimate, in its very occurrence, constitutes an actuality without an ought, yet one that generates an ought. Drawing on the example of Sartre and Beauvoir, the article examines an attempt to establish an ought that structures and preserves the relationship while protecting it from habit, dependency, and coercion. This self-generated ought safeguards both the couple and each individual within it from external determinations imposed upon relationships or intimacy. Following Jullien, the article maintains a distinction between the intimate and the amorous, endorsing the claims that not every intimate relation is amorous and that not every amorous relation contains intimacy. While the amorous presupposes and conforms to socially established norms, the intimate gives rise to a distinct logic that suspends the tension between the ought and the actual, functioning as a condition of possibility for a shared project rather than a pre-given model.
