Summary/Abstract: The text examines Thomas Hobbes’s understanding on trust, and the use he makes of it both as basic concept in his definition of covenant, and as a social condition for viable social relations. I analyze the paradoxical relations between trust and fear, as well as the conditions of trust in Leviathan and in the earlier expositions of his political theory, in connection with Deborah Baumgold’s thesis about limited absolutism in Hobbes’s early philosophy, based on the master-servant analogy. Finally, I focus on the role of Hobbes’s concept of human nature as focal point of theoretical and practical problems about trust, stemming from the blurred difference between the person of the sovereign, and the institution, and resulting in Hobbes’s underdeveloped justification of absolute sovereign power against the possibility of its abuse.
