Summary/Abstract: This paper explores two types of Christian widow households in the Ottoman Balkans, with an emphasis on their taxation status. By using data from the 16th-century censuses (defters) of the Prizren province (sancak), the percentage of widows in the general population has been calculated as well as the factors affecting their lives in this area.
