Summary/Abstract: The rapid advancement of technology and its easy adoption by the masses is disrupting long-standing habits and ways of doing business at the individual and societal level. New communication technologies are changing not only lifestyles and communication practices but also ways of perceiving and thinking about the world. Through the new media, individuals move from the passive spectator position offered by centralized communication systems to the active participant position, overcoming time and space constraints and freely expressing their individual ideas and thoughts. Users have the opportunity to form public opinion on issues that concern them, give voice to social movements and indirectly participate in the construction of pluralist democracy. This study aims to reveal how and in what way the widespread use of new media affects freedom of the press. For this purpose, statistical data on the use of new media obtained from Wearesocial, Archive, Statista and other digital platforms were used as independent variables, while the press freedom index reports published by Reporters Without Borders and Freedom House since 2002 were used as dependent variables. In line with the purpose of the study, the relevant concepts and theories are presented and then analyzed comparatively to determine whether there is a significant relationship between these variables and in which direction. As a result of the research, it has been revealed that the freedom of the press index is declining due to the increase in the use of new media in the world.
