Summary/Abstract: The article examines trust in tradition as a sustainable political orientation. Given the well-known difficulty of fixing precise meanings for the concepts of “trust” and “tradition”, the analysis begins by constructing their definitions in order to focus on a specific relationship between them - namely, “trust in tradition”. After outlining the modern distrust of tradition, the article proceeds to justify trust in tradition from the standpoint of political theory. It is argued that conservatism readily accommodates a rational and secular defence of tradition if grounded in trust. Although conservatism has been historically linked to religious faith, trust in tradition enables a conservative orientation to remain compatible with the philosophical scepticism of modernity, particularly insofar as such scepticism entails a critical stance toward the limits of human reason.
