THE SEMANTIC ANALYSIS OF LEXEMES DERIVED FROM THE ONOMATOPOEIC FORM PRAS-

Summary/Abstract: This paper will analyze the motive form pras- and its suffixed derivatives from a word formation, semantic and cognitive linguistic perspective. Once the derivational directions are determined and presented, their semantic analysis will be initiated. Our goal is to establish the cognitive-semantic mechanisms which enable the development of new meanings. The meanings of derivatives will be observed by determining how the semantics of the motive form pras- is reflected in the lexicon of its derivational nest. The development of secondary meanings of many derivatives is based on the mechanisms of conceptual metaphors and metonymies, as well as synesthetic transfers, which will be listed and described in detail. The analysis was conducted on the unpublished material of the Dictionary of the Serbo- Croatian Literary and Vernacular Language of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, which includes the lexicon of the given lexico-semantic group from the entry pras to prasnuti, which belongs to the same derivational nest.
