Summary/Abstract: The paper examines the origin of nihilism that, in the form of radical violence, manifests itself as an organising principle by which a „new world” is to be created. Destruction is represented, through terrifyingly perverted meaning of human life, as a creative force. The interpretation of the activity of spirit, in the form of philosophy and literature, has, in this case, a purpose to overcome the passive nihilism and, implicitly, a naive understanding of nihilism, toward a more complete perception of the conditions of self-understanding that Nietzsche and Dostoevsky illuminated by their writings. Namely, after the completion of traditional metaphysics, as well as of idealism in its historical range from Plato to Hegel, challenge remains: to face nihilism as the realism of our age and, immanently, as a necessary way of understanding the existence itself.
