Summary/Abstract: The syntactic status of the Serbian conjunction čim ᾿as soon as/since/if᾿ is special — depending on various morphological, lexical, syntactic and pragmatic parameters, it can have a meaning that “balances” from temporal to causal, but also to conditional. The aim of this paper is to describe the different types of sentences with the conjunction čim, as well as to point out sentences in which the so-called reverse causal conditionality is achieved — the main clause indicates the assumed cause of the situation in the dependent clause, and the dependent clause indicates the real situation that serves as the basis for logical inference about that cause. Such Serbian constructions correspond to causal sentences with the conjunction raz ᾿since᾿ in East Slavic languages. Further it has been shown that the conjunction čim, similar to the East Slavic conjunction raz, can also function in conditional constructions with weakened hypotheticality.
