«You can say that, but no one says that» (about Selective Functions of Grammatical Forms)

Summary/Abstract: The language system has a large reserve of possibilities for expressing meanings, which is used only partially. This is found, in particular, when comparing Slavic languages and concerns the categories of number, gender, impersonality, etc. But the most interesting are the situations when certain morphological “prohibitions” (filters) are connected with the specifics of the lexical meaning. This is a selective role of grammatical meanings, embodying the interaction of vocabulary and grammar. In the paper, this thesis will be demonstrated on the example of nouns with a temporal meaning (Russian неделю, зимой, уֳром, в ֲонедельник, ֲо ֲяֳницам, ֲод Новый ֱод, на Рождесֳво, etc.).
