Summary/Abstract: The adverbial expression v pervyj (vtoroj, tretij etc.) raz ‘for the first (second, third, etc.) time’ signifies that the event in question occupies the first, second, third, etc. position within an ordered series of similar events. Nonetheless, the meaning of this expression may be incorporated into the overall meaning of the sentence in various ways. We illustrate how this integration occurs across three distinct types of usage: Petya priexal v Belgrad v tretij raz ‘Petya came to Belgrade for the third time’ — Tretij raz Petya priexal v Belgrad osen’ ju ‘The third time, Petya came to Belgrade in the autumn’ — V tretij raz Petya soglasilsja ‘On the third occasion [lit. ‘third time’], Petya agreed’. The factors that affect sentence comprehension are its communicative structure and the way the valencies of v N-j raz ‘for the N-th time’ are filled.
