Summary/Abstract: This article is devoted to Ryszard Stanisławski – art historian, curator, museum professional, and director of the Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź from 1966 to 1991 – and serves primarily as a preliminary sketch for a more comprehensive account of his rich biography. The author outlines the most significant aspects of Stanisławski’s professional activity, including his promotion of Polish art internationally, his role in shaping the canon of Polish modern art, and his efforts to modernize cultural institutions. These themes are critically examined in the context of Stanisławski’s personal choices and career trajectory, as well as the broader functioning of cultural institutions under the conditions of the Polish People's Republic (PRL). The conceptual frameworks of “social biography” and “biographical materialism” are employed to guide the analysis toward a detailed reconstruction of his life, while also considering a range of external factors – political, economic, social, and otherwise— that directly shaped his life and structured the field of his activity. The discussion draws upon both existing scholarship on and by Stanisławski, as well as original research, including archival investigations conducted within the framework of a doctoral project.
