Summary/Abstract: Besides the designers of famous buildings, architectural historiography equally promotes the clients who ordered their construction and brought it to an end. Hence, many rulers, religious leaders, merchants, bankers, industrialists, entrepreneurs, and rentiers earned their place in history as patrons of famous architects. The same applies to the clients from Serbia, who built the country in the last two and a half centuries. Oral agreements between clients and builders are increasingly difficult to reconstruct with time, while written ones are incomplete and contradictory. Therefore, the complete reconstruction of this sensitive connection represents one of the most demanding tasks of contemporary historiography, regarding both factual and interpretive aspects.
