Biographical Entries in the “Encyclopedia of the Centennial of the Catholic University of Lublin”: Lexicographical Challenges

Summary/Abstract: The Encyclopedia of the Centennial of the Catholic University of Lublin is a work that presents the achievements of the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin – a private university with state academic rights, founded in 1918. The aim of this publishing project was not only to document the University’s teaching and research activities conducted between 1918 and 2018, but also to highlight its contribution to cultural, sociopolitical, and religious life. The biographical section of the encyclopedia contains 2,026 entries, covering not only academic staff but also individuals who held managerial positions within the university’s administrative structures, notable alumni (especially those distinguished in various fields of activity), honorary doctors of KUL, recipients of other university awards, as well as donors and benefactors of the University. Many modern computer-based methods and techniques were employed during the practical implementation of this project. A number of methodological solutions used in the creation of this encyclopedia – as well as the detailed instructions, model entry templates, and the ways key substantive and lexicographical issues were addressed, all of which are discussed in the article – may prove very useful for developing methodological concepts of other works of an encyclopedic or biographical dictionary nature. These guidelines can also be applied in the actual implementation process of similar publications.
