Summary/Abstract: The work of the poet and theologian, Simeon Polotsky (Samuel Sitnianowicz-Piotrowski) is a milestone in the history of Russian culture, which in the second half of the 17th century opened up to artistic, philosophical and theological currents fl owing from Western Europe. A turning point in Polotsky’s life was his studies, which contributed to the formation and crystallization of a mature socio-religious worldview and infl uenced the shape of his writing work in Moscow. For many Ruthenians in the 17th century, studying at the Vilnius Academy was a chance to enter the political and clerical elite of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and even further, in the Muscovite State. Many members of the Uniate Church were recruited from among the Ruthenian students in Wilno (Vilnius) (Union of Brest 1596). This article presents arguments that may prove that S. Polotsky studied in Wilno, as well as that he belonged to the Basilian Order, which became a turning point in his further artistic and theological career in Moscow.
