Summary/Abstract: Inspired by recent publications on the hetaira Phryne of Thespia by Laura McClure and Melissa Funke, this paper reexamines and reassesses the extant historical evidence surrounding one of the most renowned hetairai of the classical period—and indeed, of Greek antiquity more broadly. The available evidence is analyzed through the lens of three key scholarly issues, which, due to the fragmentary and complex nature of the sources, can only be explored in limited detail: 1. The information provided by ancient sources regarding Phryne’s life and the question of its historical reliability; 2. The trial of Phryne for impiety before the Athenian judges —arguably the most famous episode associated with her—and the sources that recount this event; 3. Phryne’s reception as a muse and model for artists, particularly sculptors and painters such as Praxiteles and Apelles, both in the classical period and in later epochs. The study concludes that the biographical tradition of Phryne, as it has come down to us, remains both intellectually provocative and historically compelling — worthy of renewed scholarly attention. At the same time, it raises a critical question to what extent it is possible today to construct a biography of an ancient Greek hetaira — albeit one who arguably left the most substantial imprint on the historical record.
