Summary/Abstract: Being mentioned for the first time in Dernier royaume, Les Ombres errantes, “shadow” as a topic has been developed in all volumes, including the las one, Les désarçonnés. This paper attempts to analyze1 the “shadow” as a topic in Pascal Quignard’s books, being a structural matrix of all his works; we have to highlight the fact that “shadow” is a key concept that sets up the imaginary universe of Pascal Quignard. The emphasis is on the sequences of this topos such as: the never-ending struggle towards inaccessible, the lack of image and the art of melancholy. This paper focuses on his “silent boat” through night’s hieroglyphs on the day’s table, analyzing time, death and mystery seas, all of them being the remains of ancient times. The attitude might be of strong desire but, of thirst as well; a thirst to keep digging into the depth of hidden essence.
