Metacommunication, a Symbolic Process of Multidimensional Self-Reconfiguration

Summary/Abstract: An exclusively human ability, directing the interlocutor towards areas of understanding of messages that are different from the meanings contained at the “apparent” level, objectifies metacommunication. Circumscribed to the communication process, it generates added value through interpretative diversity. The set of ways of transmitting-receiving the contents present in the communication flow – verbal, nonverbal, and paraverbal, with their constitutive elements – adds notes of complexity to the individual’s ability to decode messages, going beyond the meanings usually received. Characterized by the phrase communication about communication, the potential offered by metacommunication takes human interaction to an infallible level of superiority. The article captures, in a theoretical approach, the plurivalence of metacommunication, the dynamism with which it impregnates, daily, interpersonal relationships, its inevitable ubiquity in their development.
