Theatre and Archives: In the Footsteps of a Performance

Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the all-important issue of using theatre archives in theatre studies research and for compiling theatre histories both in a single country or region, and on a European and global scale. Different aspects of the subject are touched upon: problems arising in the processes of locating, researching and analysing archival documents; credibility and objectivity of the reconstruction of a performance or an entire theatrical context based on archival materials; implications for the extension of existing archival holdings and new opportunities and challenges faced by the practice of preservation of contemporary theatre artefacts. A special focus is the analysis of the situation of Bulgarian theatre archives and ideas for its improvement and actualisation.
