Summary/Abstract: The present study is the result of a profound meditation on the Socialist Realism in art, on the historical and political conditions that influenced its evolution in Romania, from 1948 to 1965. As a part of our recent history, this chapter has just begun to be studied, as the artworks belonging to this period have been hidden for a long time in the deposits of museums and public collections, because of public disgrace towards the previous political system. This historical interval coincides with the establishment of socialist realism in Romania, and it manifested in its purest form, fully receiving the effluvia of contemporary Soviet art, where this current began to manifest from the beginning of twentieth century. At the end of 2nd World War, in the repressive climate of Soviet totalitarian ideology, the Romanian fine arts have been subordinated to Marxist-Leninist principles and to the ideals of socialist construction of the entire country. Three guiding principles stood at the basis of fine arts that manifested during this period: the relation of art with the masses, the aesthetic expression of the class struggle and the identification of artists with the ideas of the ruling party. The political ideology imposed in Romania meant for the fine artists a completely new world to which they had to adapt. The realist-socialist propaganda manifested as an official trend in art, which led to major changes speaking about the themes covered by them. The new hierarchy of fine art themes had to strictly highlight the achievements of the new order. Art became a state problem, an instrument of propaganda.
