THE 1818 MARRIAGE DECREE

Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the Marriage Decree adopted at the St. George’s Day Assembly in Belgrade on May 14/26, 1818. It lists marital customs that the state regarded as harmful to social development and sought to eradicate. The significance of the Decree lies in the fact that, for the first time after liberation from Ottoman rule, such harmful customs were systematically enumerated, and the marriage regulations issued in the following years largely relied on its provisions. In addition to the seven articles enumerating these abuses, of particular importance is the extensive introduction, which vividly depicts the condition of Serbian society at the time and highlights the new authorities’ aspiration to align it with the values of Christian Europe. The document is preserved in the Archives of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts under signature 687.
