Summary/Abstract: The war in Ukraine and shifting global dynamics have prompted the European Union to reconsider its role in international security. This paper argues that the great powers – USA, China, and Russia – are moving toward regional unipolarity, where each state focuses on securing its own region, reducing the costs of defence. For the EU to remain competitive, it must combine liberal and realist approaches, enhancing military capabilities, and creating stronger diplomatic alliances. The EU must also adapt its institutional structure to handle defence decisions and possibly establish a regional power centre. The key to EU security lies in harmonising member states’ divergent interests while pursuing a strategic balance between hard and soft power.
