Summary/Abstract: The biographical entry on FelixDzerzhinsky (Polish: Feliks Dzierżyński),commissioned by the editors of the Pol-ish Biographical Dictionary from WładysławPobóg-Malinowski and delivered by theauthor in the summer of 1939, was writ-ten in accordance with the rules in forceat the time. The war and the subsequentchange in the political system delayed pub-lication. In 1947 the text became subject tocensorship by the communist authoritiesof the People’s Republic of Poland (andimposed self-censorship). A biography ofDzerzhinsky, reworked by Helena Waniczek(Wereszycka) and approved by members ofthe Editorial Committee, was rejected by thecensors. The history of this article, writtenfor a scholarly publication, illustrates therapid decisions made regarding the intro-duction of Stalinist principles that restrictedacademic freedom and their consequencesbetween 1947 and 1949.
