Summary/Abstract: After the establishment of Rus-sian rule over the territories of the formerGrand Duchy of Lithuania, eff orts were ini-tially made to integrate these areas into theempire while maintaining the existing legalsystem and preserving noble self-govern-ment. A key function of the noble assem-blies (sejmiks), which were the institutionalbedrock of this system, was the election ofoffi cials. Every three years, hundreds of rep-resentatives of the privileged estate, includ-ing members of the judiciary, were electedby the sejmiks. This article analyses thesocial background, education, wealth, andcareers of offi cials in the Vilnius Guberniafrom 1801 to 1831, revealing the increasingstratifi cation within this group.
